New Year - New Projects ....

I always love the start of a new year with the promise of so much ....new designs, new techniques, new quilts!!  So this year I have decided to jump in and begin as I mean to continue.... I've signed up for an online class with Elizabeth Barton titled 'Dyeing to Design'. If you haven't discovered Elizabeth's recent books 'Inspired to Design' and 'Working in Series' I can highly recommend them.

While I have done a bit of fabric dyeing in the past,  its all been a bit hit and miss!!!  This class is all about dyeing fabrics and then designing and making a small quilt using the fabric - the perfect next step for me.

The first challenge is to dye an 8 step colour/value run.  Here is my attempt.  I was working with a deep navy dye ...   it should have been a black dye  ( managed to 'stuff up' my dye purchase by ordering half the quantity I was meant to!!!  must have been distracted by Christmas!!!)  still I think I have achieved a satisfactory result.....

The process is a little different to the way I have dyed in the past ... but it makes sense ....  the penny has dropped and I feel I could now work out how to dye any colour/value combination.

I have settled on a landscape for the quilt and started with number of value sketches. These are the best of couple............

I'll try a few more options before I attempt making the quilt!!!!  I'll let you know how I get on.....

Wishing you a Happy and Creative New Year.............
