Yellow Bird Applique Border

I have finally settled on the border design for the Yellow Bird Applique.  I want to have a very wide border with lots of applique.   My inspiration is the Baltimore Album Quilt made in 1845 made by Hannah  Firoved and her niece Margaretta.  This album quilt is one of the largest documented in the Maryland Quilt Project measuring 118 inches square.  Each applique block is 16 inches square and the border 16 inches wide!  The stems and vines were worked in a satin embroidery stitch!

I think this style of border will work really well with the blocks I have already made (see earlier posts).  My blocks are only 12 inches square and the border will be 12 inches wide.    I am using two flowers from the quilt blocks and including a small yellow bird and lots of different greens for the leaves. The main vine will be appliqued with the smaller branches embroidered with a stem stitch ... definitely not satin stitch!!!   Here is a  mock up of the first repeat of the border design ......

The design will start in the bottom left hand corner as in the 1845 quilt and work around the quilt to the opposite corner.  So I have plenty of applique to keep me occupied for quite some time !

  1. Perfect time to begin - and the colours are a perfect match for the season.....will be fabulous.

  2. Challenging indeed Carolyn. It looks lovely and I look forward to watching it grow.

  3. Wow! It's gorgeous Carolyn. The yellow bird gives that block a great lift too.
