Boro Vest ... Part 1 The Pattern

At the Canberra Quilt Show  there was a very interesting exhibition of Boro stitching ... including some antique pieces as well as some more modern ones. The piece that caught my eye was a simple vest. So since then I've been thinking about how I can make a Boro style vest for myself ........

First step is to find a pattern.  I thought about drafting a pattern from a vest  but decided that it might be easier to use a commercial pattern.  Found this Simplicity one with a bit of shaping and thought that would be good ....

I don't want the collar or the zip front.  My plan is to have a reversible version with a binding for the edges....   So the first step was to make up the basic vest and see what it looked like.  I chose a Japanese fabric with the plan that this would be the lining/reverse side .....

The shape is quite flattering so a good starting point and I will build the boro style fabrics on the reverse ....

so now I'm off to raid the scrap box and the stash to see what I can find   ..............

I'll let you know how I get on!!

  1. Exciting! You've been busy while I've been on the road. I'll be keeping tabs on this project.
